Choose skincare packaging by matching the formula, dispensing needs and intended use before deciding on appearance. A bottle that looks suitable in a photograph may not dispense the product correctly or suit the final formula. Review the full pack with the formulation and filling partner before committing to decorated components.

Start with use and dispensing

Describe whether the product is a cleanser, cream, serum or another format, how much a user should dispense and where it will be used. Consider one-handed use, travel, wet environments, refill expectations and the product’s texture. Ask the partner to assess the proposed closure and dispensing mechanism against the formula.

  • Pumps: evaluate dose, priming, product evacuation and performance with the chosen viscosity.
  • Droppers: assess control, closure and how the formula moves through the selected system.
  • Jars: consider access, repeated opening, closure and intended application method.
  • Tubes: review dispensing, seal, material and how the final formula behaves in the pack.

No format is inherently suitable for every product. Explore skincare product directions alongside packaging sourcing support.

Review formula and component compatibility

Ask what compatibility and stability assessments are needed for the final formula, contact materials and closure system. Discuss leakage, discolouration, odour changes, seal performance and dispensing over the intended use period. A packaging sample or an initial sensory trial alone cannot establish shelf life.

Keep the tested configuration identifiable. A different pump, liner, resin, coating or supplier can change the pack and may require further review. Record approved component references with the formula version.

Understand capacity, fill and assembly

Nominal container capacity and intended product fill are separate specifications. Ask the filling partner to confirm fill target, headspace, closure fit, assembly and relevant checks. Confirm whether supplied samples represent final production materials and dimensions.

List every component in a pack specification: container, closure, liner where applicable, label or decoration, carton and insert. Identify who supplies each item and who is responsible for checking the assembled pack.

Match customization to MOQ

Stock components, custom colours, special tooling, printed decoration and gift boxes can create different commercial requirements. Ask for separate minimums and charges. If packaging must be bought in excess of the filling quantity, clarify surplus ownership, storage and repeat-order arrangements.

Use the cosmetic MOQ guide to compare a simple initial pack with a more customized alternative on a like-for-like basis.

Approve artwork after the product details are stable

Prepare brand assets and a dieline-based artwork file, then confirm the destination-specific label requirements with the responsible reviewer. Check legibility, available print area, batch identification space and any barcode requirements for the sales channel. Avoid final printing while the ingredient declaration, fill size or claims are unresolved.

Consider the delivery route

Retail display, online fulfilment and distributor shipments place different demands on the pack. Discuss transit protection, carton configuration and suitable checks for the route. Fragrance or other products may need additional logistics review based on their composition and shipping mode; confirm with the responsible logistics provider.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose packaging before the formula?

You can set a visual and functional direction early, but final component approval should account for the formula and the partner’s compatibility and filling review.

Can a standard pack carry my branding?

Ask which label, printing and decoration options are available for that component. Availability and minimums depend on the supplier and specification.
