Private label hair care starts with a specific product and user need, followed by formula review, sampling, packaging selection and a project-level quotation. Choose a manufacturing route by category fit and evidence, rather than treating all shampoos, conditioners, masks and serums as interchangeable products.

Define the product’s place in a routine

State whether the product is rinse-off or leave-on, the intended hair type, sales channel and application instructions you want to explore. A salon treatment concept and a daily retail shampoo need different briefs. Describe texture, fragrance preference, dispensing, rinse behaviour or finish in observable terms.

For an initial range, explain why the products belong together. Ask whether separate formulas or fragrance variants create different development and minimum-order requirements. Review the available hair-care category directions before fixing the range.

Set a formula brief with practical priorities

Separate required attributes from preferences. Provide ingredient preferences and any ingredients you want the partner to review or avoid, while allowing the formulator to assess feasibility. Marketing phrases should be turned into questions about the final product and supporting evidence. Do not assume that the presence of one ingredient proves a performance claim.

When considering scalp-related or therapeutic-sounding positioning, ask the responsible market reviewer to assess product classification and claim boundaries before artwork is approved. A cosmetic concept should not be presented as a medical treatment merely because the brand sells through a clinic or salon.

Compare existing and custom routes

Ask which existing formula directions fit the brief and what a custom development route would involve. Confirm permitted changes, formula rights, documentation, sample revisions and repeat-order arrangements. Our OEM versus ODM guide explains why the agreement matters more than the label used by a supplier.

Make sample feedback repeatable

Record formula version, application amount, use method and packaging. Evaluate sensory properties consistently: spread, lather where relevant, rinse feel, wet and dry feel, fragrance and finish. A controlled feedback sheet is more useful than a general comment such as “make it more premium.”

Keep sensory preference separate from technical validation. Ask the manufacturing partner what stability, microbiological, compatibility and other product-specific assessments are appropriate. Consumer impressions alone do not establish safety, shelf life or performance claims.

Choose packaging for the formula and use setting

A pump should work with the selected viscosity, and a closure should suit the intended handling conditions. Discuss dose, leakage, evacuation, pack size, labelling and transport. A salon pack and a retail pack may create separate component and filling requirements. Explore packaging support alongside formula selection.

Confirm MOQ and production responsibilities

Request minimums per formula, size, fragrance and decorated component. Ask which specification and sample become the production reference, how changes are approved, what quality records are available and how delivery responsibilities are divided.

ZYRA coordinates the project; selected partners manufacture. Review the manufacturing partner overview and use the MOQ guide before expanding the range.

Frequently asked questions

Can I develop shampoo and conditioner together?

You can submit a coordinated range brief, but the formulas, packaging and minimums must still be assessed individually.

Can I request a sample before production?

Include sample needs in the brief. Available options, charges, revisions and timing are confirmed for the selected development route.

Discuss your hair-care project

Provide the format, intended user, sales market, quantity per SKU, packaging preference and sample requirements. Mark undecided details clearly so suitable questions can be raised with the partner.
